How a Brazilian City Has Revolutionized Urban Planning
Summary
The sustainable city of Curitiba which was founded in 1693 by the portuguese is about 1,000 kilometers away from the famous Rio de Janeiro. The city of Curitiba is said to be way ahead of its time. They produced a recycling crew in Brazil in the late A late 1980’s. Which is what makes Curitiba sustainable and is said to be one of the most pleasant places to live and work. There is no sprawl, heavily traffic or wide spread environmental damage. The United Nation gave Curitiba the highest environmental prize for it's recycling process. The mayor who made this city sustainable is Jaime Lerner who believed people mattered more than economics when designing a city incorporated sustainable efforts when designing Curitiba. He believed in three components for the future in society which were mobility, sustainability and identity. He transformed the city transportation by incorporating a system of three roads that allow for a way into the city, a way out of the city and a central road for traffic as well as separate bus lines. Buses arrive every 60 seconds and are always filled with passengers. This allows for less congested roads. Learner also incorporated many parks into the city with land that was otherwise said to be unusable. He also gave incentives to the locals, he proposed that if locals clean up the areas they live he will give them food as well as money for recyclables. Lerner transformed a poor city into one of the most sustainable city in the world. “If you want to make life better for people, make the cities better for people.”
The Smart City Learning from Curitiba
Summary
This video discusses smart cities. They first start by explaining how Curitiba is a working system and capable of rapid adaptation. In 1971, Jaime Lerner became the mayor of Curitiba. He stated that the government isn’t the only one to solve problems instead, everyone in that community should help find solutions towards problems. While other politicians argued a city must enforce unnatural flood control, Lerner’s solution was to allow nature to run its course. Lerner introduced parks in Curitiba in order to control the floods. This in turn created a space where locals can enjoy and provide public awareness. Curitiba views its waterways as the cities blueprint for how the city will grew. Instead of using new technology to solve the cities problems Curitiba used the supplies they already had. While a majority of Brazil was using subway transportation, Curitiba was unable to affordable such transportation. They instead improved their already existing buses, introducing a new modern bus way system manufactured by Volvo. These transport over 1 million and a half individuals everyday. That makes up 70 precent of the population. The bushes transport 270 people at a time, this allows for a 25% reduction in the cities fuel consummation. Curitiba’s bus system is adaptable for new roads as well as flexible in terms of creating a new route system if necessary, where as subway systems are unable to do so. A sense of community is a key concept in Curitiba, they transformed a street into a public open space for individuals to enjoy within 72 hours. This public space allowed for the poor and rich communities to come together.

He explains that the design of the city and education of sustainability is a key role in reducing our environmental impact. If we only depend on automobiles we are not only harming the environment we are also creating congestion as well as affect individuals happiness index within a community. Curitiba relies on a design that allows individuals to be living as well as working together. The city of Curitiba is designed to ensure public happiness as well reduce the environmental impact previous cities have caused. I agree with Lerner with the fact that we must act fast in creating a sustainable future because it is possible and will benefit humanity.
